Use the SSP Speech Sound Play Plan before teaching any phonics programme, not just the Speech Sound Pics Approach, to screen for dyslexia risk by assessing phonemic awareness and phonological working memory. We are identifying the 1 in 4 children at risk of struggling to learn phonics before phonics instruction begins.
IPA-aligned Phonemies are Speech Sound Monsters®. They show children the speech sound value of letters. Letters are pictures of speech sounds (Speech Sound Pics®), making word mapping visual, linguistic, and fun. Reading for pleasure by 7!

Core Code Level Readers
The words are Code Mapped® to show the graphemes in each word. The readers allow children to practise blending the Core Code GPCs. They are a means to an end, but we can still make them as interesting as possible! Also use the Monster Spelling Piano app as seen left!
To include all learners let's also Monster Map the books and also show the sounds!
Miss Emma
Neurodivergent Reading Whisperer®
We review all Code Level Readers to ensure that the children at each level can cope with the word structure.
I’ve shared a few videos on this page, showing 1:1 work with Reception children, guided by their Code Level. One particularly important activity is paired code mapping. I train teachers to use this activity to support the development of orthographic knowledge in their students, using these resources. It significantly accelerates progress through the Core Code Levels.
There is an SSP bookcase for each of the four Core Code Levels!
Use the Decodable Readers Guide to add Code Level Readers. The books on MonsterMappedWords.com are Code Mapped to show the graphemes, and and Monster Mapped to show the graphemes AND sound value!
