How Speech Sound Play and the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach Fit Within the Word Mapping Mastery® System
Word Mapping Mastery® has one goal: confident bidirectional word mapping, connecting speech, print and meaning for life.
For parents, the starting point is always ShowTheCode.com and the Word Mapping Mastery® Foundation Training. The training provides an understanding of how children connect speech, print and meaning, helping parents identify what their individual child needs and choose the most appropriate activities, technologies and approaches.
Speech Sound Play provides playful activities that support phonemic awareness, phonological working memory, phoneme articulation and speech-to-print mapping. These activities can be used from infancy through to older children who require additional support.
The 60 Second Spelling Routine can be used alongside Speech Sound Play, helping children secure speech, print and meaning through daily speech-to-print and print-to-speech word mapping.
Children may already have begun their Word Mapping Mastery® journey through MySpeekie® with Fliss and the Phonemies®, or through Speedie Readies® and The Village With Three Corners books before beginning the Reception 10 Day Speech Sound Play Plan.
For children beginning the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach in Reception, the 10 Day Speech Sound Play Plan provides a playful introduction before children begin learning the Core Code. The Monster Routine introduces the 60 Second Spelling Routine.
The Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach is a whole-class, self-paced approach to systematic phonics, supporting children to become confident readers and accurate spellers through speech-to-print and print-to-speech word mapping.
Children can begin Speedie Readies® at different points in their journey. Some begin The Village With Three Corners books in the early years, while others begin after reaching the end of the Purple Core Code Level within the SSP Approach.
Children identified through Dys-Code, age 3 dyslexia risk screening, may benefit from MySpeekie®, Speech Sound Play and other appropriate Word Mapping Mastery® resources before starting Reception.
Whatever the route, the destination remains the same:
Word Mapping Mastery®: confidence with bidirectional word mapping, connecting speech, print and meaning for life.
