The 60 Second Spelling Routine
The "60-Second Spelling Routine," developed by Emma Hartnell-Baker, is a word mapping exercise that forces the brain to connect speech sounds (phonemes) with their written letters (graphemes) and meanings. It is designed to build permanent spelling skills rather than just temporary rote memorisation ie it stores the word in the orthographic lexicon (the brain's word bank) for instant recognition when reading and accurate spelling when writing. The word is not memorised using letter names.

Children learn the 60 Second Spelling Routine as part of Speech Sound Play from around the age of three or during the Speech Sound Play Plan pre-phonics, in Reception. It forms part of our Dys-Code® dyslexia risk screening and intervention approach before phonics.
Phonemies® help us to Show the Code™, enabling children to see which letters are graphemes and the speech sound each grapheme represents. If there is no indication of dyslexia risk, children can then use the 60 Second Spelling Routine without the Phonemies® however you'll find that they want to as they love them so much. It typically takes around one to three run-throughs with the mapped word for children to store the speech sounds (phonemes), spellings (graphemes) and meaning in the brain's word bank (orthographic lexicon), leading to instant word recognition when reading and accurate spelling when writing. This leads to Word Mapping Mastery®.
